The US and the Ukrainian president are meeting today to discuss the war with Russia

US President Donald Trump has pledged he is “going to end the war” as he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington.

Mr Trump described Zelensky as a “strong leader” and a “man I’ve got to know very well”, saying it was an “honour” to meet him.

He also confirmed he would be discussing his recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The US President said: “I think we're making great progress.

“We're going to be talking about that today. We'll be talking about what took place yesterday with my phone call with President Putin.

“I think that things are coming along pretty well. It began with Alaska, where I think certain guidelines were discussed. And we want to see if we can get this done.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is ready to negotiate in any format to end the war.

Asked if he would make concessions, he said: “First of all, I think we need to sit and speak. The second point, we need a ceasefire. Even now, you see in the Middle East, it’s very difficult to hold a ceasefire.”

Mr Zelensky added: “Bilateral, trilateral: it doesn’t matter. Just peace. This is important.”

He also stressed that securing bilateral security guarantees with the US is “the most important document because the US is very strong”.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke for two hours yesterday, two months after their Alaska summit.

The leaders have agreed to meet in Budapest, Hungary, with Mr Trump saying it will happen “within two weeks or so, pretty quick”.

“High-level” advisers from both sides are set to meet next week, ahead of the summit.

Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social that the aim of the meeting is to “bring this ‘inglorious’ war between Russia and Ukraine to an end”.

The Ukrainian President will be aiming to secure further US support in the war against Russia’s invading forces.

This follows two very different Oval Office meetings between Mr Zelensky and Mr Trump earlier this year.

The divide between the US and Ukraine was exposed on camera when Mr Zelensky visited Washington in February, amid expectations he would sign a minerals deal.

At the time, Mr Trump was reportedly offended by Mr Zelensky’s choice of attire, which he has worn consistently since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

Today, Mr Trump said that the Ukrainian President "looked beautiful" in his jacket.
