Police have revealed the mundane noise which sparked a mass stampede of spring breakers on a Florida beach.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood of Volusia County revealed on Monday that crushed water bottles was the sound that sent hundreds of youths running in terror across the famous Daytona Beach.
"There were zero gunshots on the beach," Sheriff Chitwood said after footage of the chaotic scenes went viral online.
The sheriff confirmed that 50 deputies were positioned among the crowd when the stampede occurred.
Despite the widespread fear seen in the footage, no actual threat existed on the beach itself.
But over the course of the weekend, police revealed how deputies made a total of 133 arrests, with 84 in Daytona Beach and 49 in nearby New Smyrna Beach.
Officers also seized six weapons during the spring break enforcement operation.
Sheriff Chitwood, however, clarified that none of these firearms came from the beach area where the stampede unfolded.

"Everyone can carry a gun in Florida," the sheriff noted..
The confiscated weapons were recovered from locations elsewhere in the vicinity rather than the crowded shoreline where panicked beachgoers had fled.
The arrests and seizures formed part of broader policing efforts during one of America's busiest spring break periods.
And while four separate shooting incidents have been reported across the city since Friday, none of these were connected to the beach stampede.

Authorities are now investigating whether the spate of gun attacks was related to the spring break, the American equivalent to the Easter holidays where students descend on party towns in the sunny south.
Kissy Derito, in town with her family, told local station WFTV of the chaos facing locals and tourists alike over the weekend.
"Twerking, dancing, stopping traffic, cussing people, flipping people off, stopping everyone, screaming," she said.
"It was insane."
Ms Derito said the college party carnage spilled out on to the streets, bringing traffic to a halt.
"There was a poor [man] that's never been to Florida in the elevator last night, and he was like: 'This is our first time ever in Florida,'" she said.
"He was like: 'Should we pack up and leave?'"
