Utah Governor Spencer Cox previously said he would seek the death penalty for suspected killer Tyler Robinson

The alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk is refusing to cooperate with the authorities, despite those around him helping the FBI's investigation into the shooting.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was taken into custody on Friday after confessing to his father, Matt Robinson, that he was guilty of killing the 31-year-old conservative activist at Utah Valley University.

His father, who owns a construction company, contacted the authorities and secured his son after he allegedly told him that we would rather take his own life than surrender himself.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox told ABC News that the suspect had "not confessed to authorities", before adding that while "he is not cooperating, all people around him are cooperating".

It was revealed on Sunday that Mr Robinson was in a relationship with "transgender flatmate" Lance Twiggs, who the Governor noted was "being very cooperative with the authorities."

Mr Robinson's partner was "aghast" after the 22-year-old was identified as the alleged assassin behind the Trump ally's murder, Axios has reported.

The outlet claimed the roommate told FBI agents: "That's what happened? Oh my God. Here are all the messages."

The messages reviewed by authorities are believed to have shown a sender listed as Mr Robinson spoke about stashing a rifle in a towel and leave it in bushes near to the scene of the shooting.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said on Monday that investigators are exploring whether the suspect may have acted alone or as part of a wider plot.

Mr Bongino also noted that there are signs the alleged perpetrator had been "taken over" by radical ideology in the run up to the assassination.

The FBI Deputy Director added that although the suspect remains in police custody, the agency are "looking into" potential accomplices.

Mr Bongino told Fox News: "If this was a larger effort, if there was any aiding and abetting, whether it be financial or someone who knew the specifics of it and failed to report that, we’re looking into that.

The FBI Deputy Director also said that family and colleagues of Mr Robinson told investigators that he had become more socially withdrawn and political in the lead up to the attack on September 10.

Mr Bongino said: "It appears from the data we’ve accumulated that this ideology had infected him and had taken over.

"He was intent on making Charlie his target and people may have known in advance.

GETTY

"It’s fairly obvious this was an ideologically motivated attack.

"Charlie Kirk is a conservative commentator who sadly and tragically gave his life underneath a sign asking people to challenge his ideas, the very essence of our constitutional republic."

According to the Washington Post, the 22-year-old sent a message to a group on messaging platform Discord after the attack which read: "Hey guys, I have bad news for you all.

"It was me at UVU yesterday. I'm sorry for all of this."
