Two students were killed on Saturday following a mass shooting

A man, that police believe is responsible for the shooting at a top American university on Saturday, is in custody.

The man had a unique characteristic on his firearm which was found when he was detained, according to NBC News.

The person of interest, who was detained on Sunday morning, has not been identified and has not yet been charged, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said in a news conference.

Col. Oscar Perez, the chief of police in Providence, said that officials were not currently looking for anyone else.

Two students were killed and a further nine injured in a shooting at Barus & Holley building of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

The building includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices, according to the university’s website.

Mayor Smiley added that seven individuals who were injured at Brown remain in stable condition, while one of them is in critical but stable condition, and another has been discharged.

A shelter in place order had been issued by police earlier "has ended for the entire Brown campus," Brown University said in a message on its website.

"Police activity continues in areas that are still considered an active crime scene," the message added.

"Be advised that access to these areas of campus continues to be limited."

Within the police perimeter, "community members who leave those buildings will be unable to return," the university said.

Officials had previously said they were looking for a male dressed in black and released a video of the suspect.

His face was not visible and investigators said it wasn’t clear whether the suspect is a student.

He was last seen leaving the engineering building and some witnesses told police the suspect may have been wearing a camouflage mask, Providence Police Deputy Chief Timothy O’Hara said.

The gunman opened fire in a classroom as final exams were taking place at around 4pm local time (9pm GMT) on Saturday at the Holley engineering building at the eastern end of Brown's campus, police said.

Students at Brown University had been told to "run" or "fight" amid reports of "multiple victims" on Saturday night.

Officers in tactical gear led students out of some campus buildings and into a fitness centre, while others arrived at the shelter on buses without jackets or any belongings.

The identities of those who have died or been injured have not been released, but Brown University President Christina Paxson told reporters in a press briefing on Saturday that all the victims were students.

Ms Paxson said she was told 10 students were shot, while another person was injured by fragments from the shooting.

"The Brown community’s heart is breaking and Providence’s heart is breaking along with it," Mayor Smiley said.
