Sadiq Khan is looking to formulate a plan to replace the controversial Ulez scheme.

The London mayor is said to be bringing in experts to replace the Uez, Lez, and Congestion Charge with one fee, something he called an "attractive prize".

Khan claimed that streamlining the current system, which involves numerous fees was a goal of his.

However, he also indicated that it wouldn't be his top focus if he were to secure a third consecutive term at City Hall.

Speaking to MyLondon on how he would bring in one charge without a pay-per-mile mode, he said: "Currently, the technology doesn't exist. What we're doing in City Hall though is working with TfL to bring in-house the work that's currently being done by a private company.

"And so, at the moment, TfL procures a private company to do the work in relation to the congestion charge, the low emission zone, the ultra-low emission zone.

"During the course of one day, you can pay a number of different charges and stuff. So making it simple is clearly a prize that is attractive. I'm quite clear though that the policies we have in relation to the world's biggest clean air zone, the ultra-low emission zone, in relation to some of the other policies we have are the way to make more progress.

"Road user charging is off the table. I've got no plans to bring in road user charging. But I am keen to make it as easy as possible for those that do drive to get around London."

A £12.50 daily charge applies for driving in the Ultra Low Emission Zone, usually referred to as Ulez, if the vehicle doesn't meet certain emission standards.

The scheme has been controversial, with Conservative candidate Susan Hall saying she will scrap it on day one if she is elected.

Since the introduction of the Ulez in 2019, 128,577 fines, totalling more than £23.1million, have been cancelled after drivers managed to prove that their cars in fact did meet emissions standards.

Meanwhile, it was reported than 40 per cent of drivers in London have seen their perception of the Ulez scheme change for the worse since the expansion of the zone last year.

Hundreds of instances of attacks or vandalism have been seen across London, headlined by the so-called “Blade Runners” who have stolen or damaged cameras and posted their exploits on social media.

The most significant piece of action against the scheme was seen in Sidcup in December when explosives were used to blow up a Ulez camera causing damage to a residential property and the arrest of two men.
