Horrific pictures have emerged showing bodies of Ukrainian civilians strewn across streets in the suburbs of the capital city Kyiv.

As Russian forces begin retreating from besieged towns, journalists have been able to enter and document the atrocious scenes Kremlin troops have left behind.

In the heavily destroyed village of Bucha, at least 280 people have been found dead.

Haunting images show corpses littered on the side of roads. One body of a man was found with his hands tied behind his back.

A mass grave, reported to be 45ft long, in the grounds of a church has also been found.

Local officials began removal of the bodies last night, which number 57.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the discovery as “sickening” and promised “we will not rest until justice is done”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Bucha and met with residents who spoke about the violence enacted on them by Russian forces.

He said: “It will be recognised by the world as genocide. We know of thousands of people killed and tortured, with their limbs cut off, women raped, children killed.”

Mr Johnson said in a statement: “Russia’s despicable attacks against innocent civilians in Irpin and Bucha are yet more evidence that Putin and his army are committing war crimes in Ukraine.

“No denial or disinformation from the Kremlin can hide what we all know to be the truth — Putin is desperate, his invasion is failing, and Ukraine’s resolve has never been stronger.

Today, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss pressed for NATO allies to go further tackling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying money is still flowing from the West to Vladimir Putin’s “war machine”.

Alongside Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba in Warsaw, she said: “It is the responsibility of the UK and our allies, and that’s what Dmytro and I have discussed today, to step up our support for our brave Ukrainian friends.

“That means more weapons and more sanctions. Putin must lose in Ukraine. Later this week the G7 foreign ministers and the Nato foreign ministers will meet. We need to announce a tough new wave of sanctions.

“The reality is that money is still flowing from the West into Putin’s war machine – and that has to stop.”

She said she would be working with allies to go further banning Russian ships from western ports, cracking down on Russian banks, going after new industries “filling Putin’s war chest, like gold” and to agree “a clear timetable to eliminate our imports of Russian oil, gas and gold”.

“I will do everything in my power to starve Putin’s war machine. We are stepping up our sanctions and military support, as well as bolstering our humanitarian support package to help those in need on the ground.

“The UK has been at the forefront of supporting the international Criminal Court’s investigation into atrocities committed in Ukraine. The Justice Secretary has authorised additional financial support and the deployment of specialist investigators — we will not rest until justice is served.”
