Two officers in Manchester were stabbed by a 26-year-old man as they responded to a collision

Two police officers in Manchester were attacked with a knife in the street as they were responding to a moped crash.

Emergency services quickly rushed to the scene to attend to the officers who were injured in the stabbing yesterday afternoon.

Specialist forensic crime investigation (CSI) officers also attended the scene, and a cordon was put in place.

The man who stabbed the officers is being treated as possibly unconnected to the initial moped collision.

He was arrested at the scene and police were forced to taser him before being detained.

The 26-year-old man was taken to hospital then into custody to be questioned on the attack.

One of the officers was taken to hospital but neither have sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Manchester Evening News.

The officers were responding to a moped crash on Wood Road, on the border of Whalley Range and Stretford.

The driver had been "driving erratically" before they were involved in a collision at 4.20pm, according to police.

An 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

As the two officers responded to the crash, a man approached them and began to attack the pair with a knife.

An eyewitness mentioned seeing “lots of commotion” and an air ambulance landing nearby at about 4.30pm.

Another witness said: “I could see further police and unmarked police coming from further down the road and then the helicopter which sounds like it just left”.

Nine police cars attended the incident on Wood Road, as well as an air ambulance and advanced paramedic.

The road re-opened at around 7.45pm when the cordon was lifted.

Superintendent Cara Charlesworth said: "This was a serious assault on two officers who were simply doing their jobs and trying to keep members of the public safe.

"I can assure you that we are treating this incident with due severity and whilst I am pleased we have a man in custody, this investigation is in its early days and we are working hard to understand the full circumstances.

"I urge anyone with information about this incident that could assist our investigation to please contact police as soon as possible. This includes if you were in the area at the time and have any footage - including mobile, CCTV or dashcam."
