The pair were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary but later died

A mum and her newborn baby have tragically died in the room of a Travelodge hotel.

The pair were found unresponsive in the hotel in Leicester City Centre on Thursday, with ambulance services arriving shortly before 3pm.

They were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary but later died, Leicestershire Police said.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Police are carrying out further enquiries in relation to the sudden death of a woman and her newborn baby.

"Officers were called by East Midlands Ambulance Service shortly before 3pm yesterday afternoon (24 March) to a hotel in the Haymarket Shopping Centre, Leicester.

"The call was made following a newborn baby, who had just been delivered in a hotel room, and that the mother and child were unresponsive.

"Officers attended the scene and both were taken to hospital where sadly they were pronounced deceased shortly after.

"The deaths are not being treated as suspicious but unexplained while further enquiries are being carried out."
