Jodi Benson spoke of her excitement for the remake as she praised Halle Bailey

Halle Bailey has garnered praise from the original Ariel for her performance in Disney's latest live-action project, The Little Mermaid.

Jodi Benson, the original voice of Ariel in the animated Disney classic, spoke of her excitement for the remake as she heaped praise on Halle Bailey.

Bailey's "amazing" performance was praised as the first teaser trailer for the film appeared at D23.

The mythical mermaid is seen beneath water, longingly looking up at the sky in the hope of experiencing life above the surface.

Halle reshared the post to her own social media page, saying the comments "mean the world" to her.

"You made Ariel magical for us," she added.

Benson has previously spoken out in support of Bailey taking on the role in 2019, where she addressed backlash to her taking the role.

Jodi told audiences at FloridaCon: "I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters. What you bring to the table in a character as far as their heart and their spirit is what really counts.

"We need to be storytellers. And no matter what we look like on the outside, no matter our race, our nation, the colour of our skin, our dialect, whether I'm tall or thin, whether I'm overweight or underweight, or my hair is whatever colour, we really need to tell the story."

The trailer gave fans a first glimpse at what to expect, and an excerpt from Bailey's performance of the classic song 'Part of Your World.'
