Tesco customer forced to intervene after security guard attacked in middle of store

A video has been shared on social media of the attack

A Tesco customer started a brawl with a security guard before being floored by a passer-by.

Footage of the attack went viral on social media, with some dubbing the intervener a "legend".


The footage was taken in Fratton, Portsmouth, on Thursday evening in the branch of Tesco Extra.

In the video, the attacker can be seen removing his jacket while shouting at the security guard.

After this, the attacker is seen wildly swinging punches at the guard whilst shouting: "Who's stupid, who's f***ing stupid."

The security guard is then seen backing off as the man barrels forward, shouting.

At this point, the passerby runs towards the scene, throwing him to the ground.

He is then restrained on the floor. After getting up, he is attacked by security guards before walking away from the scene towards the exit.

Police said an arrest was made following the incident

A spokesperson from Tesco confirmed the supermarket chain was aware of the fight.

The company said it is assisting police with their inquiries following the incident, with Tesco insisting the safety of colleagues and customers is their 'number one priority'.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Police said: "Officers attended and shortly afterwards made an arrest. A 29-year-old man from Havant has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, theft from a shop and possession of a controlled drug of class B.

"He has been given police bail with conditions until Thursday 28 March, 2024, pending further enquiries."

Footage of the fight was uploaded on Thursday evening and has been viewed by hundreds of people online.

Many on social media commented on the original post, praising the passer by who stepped in to intervene.

One person wrote: "The geezer who floored him is a security guard himself well done for protecting the others."

Another added: "Who's the legend that took him down?".
