Sinkhole investigation to cost council £30k after appearing in field one year ago

It is part of a whopping £150,000 that the authority had earmarked to spend on resolving the situation, including the installation of metal fencing around the sinkhole.

The fences replaced temporary barriers after local media reported that a local grandmother, Carol Carne, and her dogs had fallen into the Teesside hole.

It is believed the appearance of the sinkhole could be linked to historic mining works in the area.

Redcar & Cleveland Council documents suggest the contractor will determine "short-term measures to reduce the risk of any further collapsing" and what long-term measures may be required.

The £30,000 bill is understood to be sourced from the local authority's environmental assets budget.

Last year, the sinkhole first gained national attention after the unfortunate encounter between Ms Carne, 61, and it as she walked her three cockapoos in the field.

One of her pups, three-year-old Ruby, fell into the hole, prompting the disabled grandmother of six to attempt to rescue her.

However, the ground gave way beneath Ms Carne's feet during the attempt and saw her plunging into the freezing water, thought to be about 12ft deep.

"At first I thought it was just a deep puddle," she recalled.

"The water just pulled me under and every time I tried to grab hold at the top the ground was just coming away. I knew I had seen two women in the park and I was screaming for help.

"My boots and coat were so soaked and heavy, I just kept getting pulled back under the water and I never touched the bottom," she continued.

While the two women sped over to help after hearing her cries, but were powerless to do anything.

Fortunately, a man who was also in the park also spotted the incident and was able to pull Ms Carne and Ruby to safety.

"If it had not been for those people, I wouldn't be here today, I would have drowned. The water was so cold and I just couldn't pull myself out," Ms Carne said.

Luckily, the grandmother and Ruby were not injured during their ordeal, but remained shaken up.

"I have cried buckets over it when I think about what might have happened and Ruby is very quiet and clingy", she told the Daily Mail.

At the time, a spokesman for Redcar & Cleveland Council said: 'Our staff are at the site today to again secure the site around the hole with Heras Fencing, and 24-hour security will be on site to ensure the safety of the public.

"The site was secured earlier this week, again with Heras Fencing, but this was taken down by persons unknown.

"We hope the woman affected makes a full recovery and we would like to thank the members of the public who came to her aid. We would like to again ask residents to please avoid the area around the hole for their own safety," they added.
