The body was "believed not to be suspicious" by police - but explosives experts were sent to the scene after items were found

A bomb squad rushed to a residential street in Stockport today after "suspicious items" were unearthed at a house at which police had found a dead body.

All three emergency services were at the scene and a cordon was put in place after police investigated a property at Woodhall Crescent in Reddish, North-East Stockport earlier this afternoon.

Bomb disposal officers were seen removing a "red box" from the property before leaving the street, local media reported, while it is now understood that old firearms had been found at the address.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson told GB News: "Greater Manchester Police were called to Woodhall Crescent in Stockport at around midday today (Monday, April 8, 2024) to a report for the concern of the welfare of a man.

"Officers attended and sadly found a man deceased at the scene which is believed to not be suspicious and next of kin have been informed.

"Whilst entering the property, suspicious items were found and Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) subsequently attended to inspect. This has now been completed and those items deemed safe.

"Enquiries on ongoing, with a cordon put in place at the time, to establish the full circumstances and ensure the safety of residents."

Residents were told to remain indoors as emergency services descended on the street, while an alleyway behind some of the homes was also cordoned off.

One woman who lives on Woodhall Crescent said police had told her "explosives" had been found at the property, the Manchester Evening News reported, and called the incident "unnerving" as she has children.

The street reopened just after 5pm today - but two police vehicles remain on the scene.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said it couldn't issue a statement on the incident as it was a police-led matter.
