The warning will be in place until 5pm

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering parts of the South East of England.

Areas affected include Brighton and Hove, East Sussex and Kent.

The warning was announced by the Met Office as it came into effect just after 12.50pm today.

It will be in place until 5pm.

Slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit Kent and Sussex in the afternoon.

These areas could see 20 to 25mm of rainfall in less than an hour, with a chance of 30 to 44mm falling in one to two hours in some places.

"This is likely to lead to some surface water flooding and disruption, whilst lightning strikes may be an additional hazard", the Met Office explained.

People living in areas affected by the weather warning have been warned there is a small chance of short-term loss of power and damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes.

Flooding of homes and businesses is also possible.

Travel may also be impacted, with water on the roads likely to lead to longer journeys and possible delays to train services.

The Met Office stated: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

"If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car).

"Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground."

It comes after the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for rain covering Scotland and southwest England on Sunday, July 20.

A thunderstorm warning was also issued for the vast majority of the country on Monday, July 21.

Weather experts warned of possible flooding in these areas, delays to public transport and power cuts.
