Nikita Mazepin will be allowed to race in the forthcoming Formula One season after the sport’s governing body confirmed Russian and Belarusian drivers will not be banned from competition.
Mazepin, the grid’s sole Russian driver, will have to race under a neutral flag, “subject to specific commitment and adherence to the FIA’s principles of peace and political neutrality, until further notice”.
The decision was made following a crisis meeting of the World Motor Sport Council, chaired by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, on Tuesday.
An FIA statement reads: "Russian/Belarusian drivers, individual competitors and officials to participate in international/zone competitions only in their neutral capacity and under the 'FIA flag', subject to specific commitment and adherence to the FIA’s principles of peace and political neutrality."
