Britons hoping to go to the boozer for later will have a pleasant surprise after being handed an extra two hours of drinking time

Pubs will stay open tomorrow until 1am as England's Lionesses prepare to face Italy in the semi-finals of the Uefa Women's European Championship.

The Home Office confirmed the move today following the successes of the Lionesses.

Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson said back in May that should either England or Wales reach the semi-finals or final of the Women's Euros, pubs would stay open till 1am.

The licensing hours for pubs have been relaxed to mark occasions of "exceptional national significance".

Emma McClarkin, who serves as CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: "The pub is the home of live sport.

"Nothing compares when it comes to bringing atmosphere and camaraderie to watching the football live, and we expect supporters will be flocking to their local to cheer on our brilliant teams."

CEO of the Night Time Industries Association Michael Kill echoed McClarkin's thoughts, saying he "warmly welcomes the Home Office's decision".

Kill added: "This is a positive and progressive move that recognises the growing popularity of women's football and its cultural significance across the UK."

The Lionesses roared through to the semi-finals after overcoming a two goal deficit against Sweden last Thursday.

They progressed through on penalties following a 2-2 draw, with 14-spot kicks being taken in a chaotic shoot-out.

England will now face Italy on Tuesday night at 8pm, as they look to book a place in the final scheduled for Sunday at 5pm.

The Home Office stated in May that should the Lionesses progress to the final, pubs will stay open longer again.

Kill added: "Much like previous extensions for national celebrations, this decision will give communities the opportunity to come together and celebrate in a safe and responsible way, while also providing a welcome boost to the night-time economy.

"It represents a valuable opportunity for hospitality businesses to maximise trade during a major event -particularly important in today's extremely challenging economic climate."

The proposed extension will be confirmed by the Home Office in advance of the final should the Lionesses make it.

McClarkin welcomed the Government's decision today, explaining the significant benefit it will provide to the industry.

She said: "Our sector plays a huge part in boosting community spirit, and extending licensing hours means people can gather for longer and host even more events that cheer on our squads."
