A police dog has died after chasing an attempted murder suspect into a lake in Leicestershire.
Police have arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and animal cruelty.
Officers were called to reports of a wanted suspect who may have been in the Watermead Park in Birstall, Leicestershire on Wednesday.
Police dog, Zyla, was deployed to assist with the search when the man ran off and entered the water.
However, Zyla became unresponsive and was rushed to a vet where she sadly died.
The suspect was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.
The circumstances of the dog's death are currently being investigated.
Leicestershire Police have paid tribute to PD Zyla who "will always be remembered for her bravery and service".

Chief Constable Rob Nixon said: "Our police dogs are an integral part of Team Leicestershire playing a crucial critical role in some of our most dangerous operations.
"Zyla died in the line of duty and will always be remembered for her bravery, her dedication and her service.
"I know many across force are deeply saddened by the loss of PD Zyla and I share in this sorrow.
"My thoughts remain with Zyla's handler and all those who have been impacted.
