'It is more important than ever that we show our love for our heroes,' said Patrick

Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs Johnny Mercer has praised GB News’ Patrick Christys on the success of his campaign to raise money for The Royal British Legion ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Patrick raised awareness of the issues facing veterans in the UK, recording his live show from Brighton where there was a struggle to find anyone willing to sell poppies after a long-serving poppy seller was no longer able to volunteer.

Launching the campaign earlier this week, Patrick said: “With all the nonsense going on in our country at the moment it is more important than ever that we show our love for our heroes.”

Speaking with Patrick while collecting for the charity at Westminster tube station, Mercer said: “I want to say well done for your efforts down in Brighton, I mean nearly £180,000, just by getting out there, seeing an issue and getting out there and getting stuck in, it's amazing!”

“This is my life's work. I came into politics, to try and change the UK's approach to Veterans Affairs. We've been able to transform it. We got the office of Veterans Affairs. We got the first cabinet minister for Veterans Affairs and we've pulled together all different strands of government to make it work for veterans. There's obviously more to do, right? But it feels fundamentally different now to be a veteran in the UK.”

Patrick began the campaign asking viewers to donate to The Royal British Legion, with the target of raising £10,000. Since then, the campaign has earned over £186,000, donated by over 11,000 supporters.
