The shopkeeper branded the incident 'crazy' and warned how people 'could have been killed'

A shopkeeper was forced to jump into action after a mystery "firebomber" torched an SUV outside his corner shop over a suspected parking row.

Girish Jeeva was inside his store in Barmulloch, Glasgow, with colleagues when he noticed a hooded man pouring fuel over a Porsche which was parked outside.

Just after the last customer had left the store on Wednesday night, the man then ignited the liquid before fleeing the scene.

Mr Jeeva quickly jumped to action to try to extinguish the flames and remove the burning can from the bonnet of the car, which he feared was going to explode.

"I put myself at risk to get the canister off the car because I thought the whole thing was going to explode," he told The Sun.

Mr Jeeva added: "When the police and fire service arrived, I told them what happened - and they said I should not have done it as I could have been badly hurt or even killed.

"But I just couldn't take the chance of it blowing up because my colleagues were inside the shop with me."

Footage of the terrifying incident was caught on CCTV, which Mr Jeeva explained was how he originally became aware of what was happening.

He said: "I looked at the camera and I could see something orange on the car.

"I then realised somebody was setting fire to it so I ran down and I took a big metal thing with me."

He added: "It was crazy. People could have been killed."

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 11pm.

Mr Jeeva explained his further horror as his fiancee often leaves their 10-week-old puppy, Leo, in the car.

Luckily, she had brought him inside before the incident.

Police are now investigating the attack which happened just days after Mr Jeeva posted on social media to reiterate his store's parking policy.

The post clarified the parking allocations outside the store, found on Barmulloch's Quarrywood Avenue, reminding locals it is the "legal owner of the car park outside the shop" - adding that some had "questioned" this.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
