Samuel Williams was filmed chanting antisemitic slurs on October 11

A University of Oxford student has been charged with stirring up racial hatred after chanting antisemitic slurs.

Samuel Williams, 20, was captured on film chanting "put the Zios in the ground" during a Palestine Coalition demonstration in Whitehall on October 11.

He was subsequently arrested on October 15 at an address in Oxford.

He was interviewed and bailed to return at a later date, before being charged today.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Detectives investigating allegations of anti-Semitic chanting at a demonstration in central London in October have charged a man.

“The investigation was launched after video footage emerged online of a man chanting in Whitehall during a Palestine Coalition demonstration on Saturday, 11 October.

“On Wednesday, 15 October officers arrested the man at an address in Oxford. He was interviewed and bailed to return at a later date.

"He was ultimately charged as above today – Tuesday, 16 December.”

The incident occurred just days after the first phase of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was accepted by both sides.

He will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 27.

Williams was also suspended by the university over the chant.

Ministers are understood to have had close contact with the university following the incident, and have made it clear that antisemitism has no place on campus or among its wider student body.

A spokesman for the university previously said: “While the university cannot comment on individual student cases, it has the power to take immediate and proportionate action including, as appropriate, suspending a student from membership of the university, whenever serious concerns are raised.

“Oxford University is unequivocal: there is no place for hatred, antisemitism or discrimination within our community, and we will always act to protect the safety and dignity of our students.”

Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, previously said there had been an “unacceptable increase in anti-Semitism” at universities and many Jewish students did not feel safe on campus.
