The flag's installation is thought to be the biggest St George's cross in the country, possibly the world

Residents of Nottingham have hailed the unveiling of the country's largest St George's Flag, as England prepares to celebrate the day of its patron saint.

The 60ft-long flag was installed on the front of the city’s council house, as locals boasted about the display.

Speaking to GB News reporter Will Hollis, locals expressed their excitement at the flag being put on display in the city, calling it "amazing".

The display even caught the eye of a tourist, who said it was "good to see a celebration of the English country".

Nigel Daykin from Canada told GB News: "I think it’s really good to see it up there. I think we should celebrate, because he is the figure head of the country in the same way it’s St. Andrew for Scotland and St. David for Wales.

"Why shouldn’t we have St. George for England?"

Nottingham local Tony Hardwick noted that England "doesn't do a lot to celebrate their own saint", in comparison to the Irish and the Welsh.

Sharing his thoughts on the display, he told Will: "I think it's pretty good actually. I think that St George could be celebrated a bit more."

Wigan couple Kay and Dave Porter were spotted taking selfies with the flag, and told Will that it is "our heritage" and we "should be doing more of it" in displaying the flag.

Kay said: "I think it's absolutely amazing, and it's proud to have something like that in our country. It's absolutely fantastic, it really is. We need more of it."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Kay's husband, Dave, said of the display: "It's absolutely brilliant, we should celebrate it more. It's absolutely amazing and shows we're proud of our heritage, there should be more of that. And it should be bigger than what it is actually!"

However, some visitors of Nottingham were indifferent to the flag, as one man admitted: "It’s just a flag, I didn’t even realise it was there if I’m honest."

Another lady admitted she "didn't know why the flag was up there" before realising it is "for St George's Day".
