A red Vauxhall Astra drove into multiple pedestrians in Arnold, Nottingham, during the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving one victim fighting for their life in hospital.
Police have confirmed a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the collision, which occurred at approximately 1.12am in Market Square - with emergency services rushing to the scene in the town centre.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that several people were struck by the vehicle, though the exact number has not been disclosed.
The driver abandoned the car at the scene and escaped on foot before officers arrived.
Detectives arrested a suspect, who was described as a white man.
The vehicle remains at the location as forensic teams examine the area for evidence.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow of Nottinghamshire Police sought to reassure local residents following the incident.
"There is no indication at this stage of any ongoing threat to the wider public," she stated.

"However, we understand the incident will cause concern in the community. Officers will remain at the scene today to carry out further inquiries, speak to local people and offer reassurance."
The senior detective urged anyone with relevant information to come forward immediately.
"It is also important anyone with information, or relevant dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile phone footage, gets in touch without delay," she added.
Police officers have been stationed throughout the town centre throughout Saturday morning, conducting interviews with witnesses and gathering evidence from the surrounding area.

A substantial police cordon remains in place across the town centre, blocking entry to Market Place and causing significant disruption for local residents and businesses.
The closures extend to several surrounding junctions, including those connecting Gedling Road to Derby Street, Hallam's Lane and Central Avenue, with authorities advising motorists to seek alternative routes.
Forensic specialists have been observed working alongside uniformed officers at the scene throughout the morning.
One woman attempting to collect her wedding cake was turned away by police stationed at the perimeter.
Kevin Wilson told Nottinghamshire Live that his family may be forced to cancel his daughter's 18th birthday celebration due to the restrictions.
"I got called this morning to say that we can't get into set up," Mr Wilson said. "We might not be able to get in all day."
