The former NHS anaesthetist has been jailed for 14-and-a-half years and struck off from the health profession

A former NHS doctor who nearly killed his girlfriend while trying to "exorcise her of evil spirits" has been struck off from the health profession, it has been ruled.

Hossam Metwally, is serving a 14-and-a-half year prison sentence after committing a series of horrifying acts, including injecting Kelly Wilson with life-threatening drugs.

Ms Wilson was left unresponsive in a deep coma in hospital following the attack.

Metwally, was deemed a "disgrace" to the medical profession and the case was described as "unlike any other in Humberside Police history".

The former anaesthetist has been described as a "religious fanatic" who practiced at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, whilst also running a clinic from home.

He was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court last year after being convicted for eight charges, including giving out poison intending to endanger life.

Metwally will now spend over 14 years behind bars for nearly killing his girlfriend.

A hearing by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) which lasted three days came to a close on Tuesday, ruling that Metwally should be erased from the medical register imminently.

During his sentencing, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said the case was "very serious and utterly bizarre", saying he had "never presided over a case like this in 41 years' professional experience of the law". He condoned Metwally's relationship with Ms Wilson as "abusive" and "a form of brainwashing".

Addressing Metwally, Judge Richardson QC continued: "You utilised your power and professional training as a doctor to commit very serious crimes.

"You perverted one of the central tenets of the medical profession by using medical procedures to execute criminal acts."

The tribunal this week lay bare two further offences that Metwally had pleaded guilty to in court.

The former anaesthetist secretly filmed to female patients undressing, which was branded "grotesque" and left victims "broken" following the incident.

Despite Metwally remaining behind bars for the foreseeable future, the panel referenced an imminent order for suspension, where if freed, would prevent him from being able to practise during the appeal period.
