Airlines such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have been hit with delays or cancellations

Travel chaos has dominated the festive weekend, with thousands of flights disrupted, as major airports were hit with a snowstorm.

A state of emergency was declared across the states of New York and New Jersey, affecting popular routes to and from the UK.

John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia Airports were all badly hit, issuing snow warnings on social media.

The snowfall meant at least 1,500 flights have been cancelled or seen major delays, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

These included at least 20 journeys between the UK.

They include trips by popular transatlantic carriers such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

As many as 8,000 other flights had been similarly disrupted across the United States.

Such was the scale of the disruption that some US airlines announced they would waive fees normally charged to passengers whose travel plans may be affected by weather-related disruptions.

American Airlines, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways are among the carriers offering this.

Around four inches of snow fell in New York City on Saturday, blanketing the city and its travel hubs.

"The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority, and I continue to urge extreme caution throughout the duration of this storm," New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

"This storm will cause dangerous road conditions and impact holiday travel," New Jersey's acting governor Tahesha Way echoed.

"We are urging travelers to avoid travel during the storm and allow crews to tend to roads," she added.

In a somewhat more bullish statement, outgoing city mayor Eric Adams declared: "That white stuff is coming, NYC! We're ready for however much we get!”

Mr Adams also celebrated the efforts of gritters and other emergency response workers for helping clear snow from roads.

The wintry conditions in the Big Apple had not been seen since a similar blanket of snow hit in 2022.

However, outside the city, as much as 10 inches of snow had fallen from Syracuse in central New York to Long Island in the southeast of the state.

In neighbouring New Jersey and Connecticut, heavy snowfall was also recorded, where 9.1 inches fell over Fairfield County.

While the snow appears to be abating, the cold snap gripping the United States is continuing, with temperatures in New York City continuing to plunge below 0C.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, California is grappling with the aftermath of a major winter storm that has buried areas in rivers of mud.
