A Devon pensioner has been ordered to pay more than £3,000 after assaulting a woman during a dispute over driveway parking.

Susan Rogers, 74, from Sidmouth, was convicted of assault by beating and using threatening behaviour towards Sue Robson following an incident in August 2023.

Exeter Magistrates' Court heard that Rogers attacked Robson after her car blocked her from driving to doctors' appointments.

The court was told that Rogers threatened to punch her neighbour's teeth in before pushing her during the confrontation.

District Judge Stuart Smith labelled Rogers's behaviour "aggressive, intimidating, threatening", noting that she swore and insulted Robson throughout the altercation.

The judge said Rogers had threatened to damage the victim's car before the situation escalated further.

Rogers believed Robson had parked in an obstructive manner on multiple occasions, which she claimed had caused her to miss appointments.

The confrontation turned physical when Rogers pushed Robson after threatening to "punch her teeth in".

The dispute broke out in Sidmouth, the seaside town where Rogers lives alone in a rented flat.

Rogers, who had no previous convictions, denied the offences but was found guilty.

The 74-year-old, who has mobility issues and lives off her pensions, was unable to provide any mitigation for her actions.

District Judge Smith imposed a total fine of £3,045, which includes court costs and £150 compensation to Robson.

That fine falls thousands of pounds below the £8,000 sum dished out to a London woman for playing loud music for seven hours in a row through the night.

It was also less costly than a fine an 80-year-old pensioner was ordered to pay almost £4,000 after losing his appeal against a noise abatement conviction for his "nuisance" cockerel.

He was initially fined £580, but after his appeal was rejected at Southampton Crown Court, he received a further £200 fine plus legal costs of £3,651.95.
