Susan Varley was left in agony and with 'horrific' injures following the attack

A grandmother was scalded with boiling water as she walked her four-year-old grandson to school.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Susan Varley, 68, was attacked by her neighbour, Ina Priestly, 56, who hurled a kettle of boiling water into her face during the school run.

Ms Varley was seen on CCTV footage collapsing in agony on the pavement while Priestly calmly returned inside her home.

Ms Varley sustained severe burns to her scalp, forehead, left cheek, ear and the back of her neck.

The pensioner was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary for emergency treatment before being transferred to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire three days later.

At Leeds magistrates’ court on March 10, Priestly pleaded not guilty to grievous bodily harm and was remanded in custody.

The trial was originally scheduled for August 5, but the attacker changed her plea to guilty on the same day.

However, Priestly avoided a prison sentence after the judge imposed a two-year community order and 25 rehabilitation sessions.

Donna Varley, 35, the victim’s daughter, described her mother’s injuries as “horrific".

She added that her eyesight was spared only because she happened to be wearing glasses at the time.

The 35-year-old said: “My mum is now a shell of the person she once was.

“[Priestly] has been nasty to my mum over the past 20 years for no reason at all.

“My mum just reported it to the council like they told her to on the many occasions when she complained.

“I think the issues started when I was a teenager over little neighbour disputes like fences that you just think are pathetic. They never really got on.”

Priestly was also ordered by the judge to pay a £114 court surcharge.

In addition, the attacker must comply with an indefinite restraining order which prohibits her from contacting Ms Varley directly or indirectly.

The West Yorkshire city's crime rate for violent offences is 44 per cent higher than Britain's national average.

According to a report by Leeds City Council last year, rape and violent disorder across the city centre had seen an "alarming increase" compared to pre-pandemic levels.

The review also discovered that crimes related to the city's night-time economy had risen.
