The Briton was not even aware of his winnings until the following morning

A Tesco delivery driver who won a multi-million pound fortune just days before Christmas has announced he intends to return to work.

Jonny Johnston from Co Fermanagh in Northern Ireland won a £3.8million Lotto jackpot on December 23.

Despite receiving an email from National Lottery informing him of his win, it was not until the next day that the 45-year-old realised the extent of his fortune.

After spotting a message from the lottery in his inbox, he assumed he had won a Lucky Dip ticket and went to bed.

It was only on Christmas Eve morning that he became aware of the extent of his win.

He said: “I was sitting on the edge of the bed on Sunday morning, trying to make sense of what I was seeing.

“I just kept staring at the numbers on my account.

“I thought maybe I had won £38,000 but then there were too many zeros.

“I passed the phone to Christina for her to check and she was in disbelief too.

“We both began to think that it was a trick, a scam even! We decided we had better call Camelot and double-check.”

After the multi-million pound prize was confirmed, Johnston returned to work.

The delivery driver still had once shift at Tesco before Christmas and did not want his colleagues to be left short-staffed.

"I’m still in disbelief. This is a dream come true for me and my family," he said.

He now plans to treat his wife and children to a luxury holiday having never been abroad together.

Johnston does not even currently own a passport.

He said: “I would love for us all to go to the Caribbean, maybe on a cruise, as it sounds and looks incredible.

“We have never had a family holiday together. I just need to apply for my passport first.”
