Supermarket giant Morrisons issues bizarre allergy advice as loyal shoppers left baffled

A whole sea bass was strangely accompanied with a warning that it "contains fish" in a Morrisons supermarket.

Customers were quick to point out that the product warning was not necessarily the most helpful piece of information.

The row erupted after one customer snapped a photo of the label on the £4.50 item while looking for something to cook for the week ahead.

They could not help but notice the allergy advice, which also flagged that the fish actually contained bones.

After the picture went up online over the weekend, it did not take long for people to chime in.

The post quickly attracted dozens of critical responses from baffled users.

One user wrote: "Morrisons Sea Bass 'may contain fish' lol. What's next ? Bread that 'may contain dough'."

Another user added: "It’s an indictment on both our education system and compensation culture."

Meanwhile, a third joked: "I bought a can of peanuts that said may contain peanuts, so, yeah, the human race is toast."

However, other social media users leapt to the supermarket giant's defence.

"In practice, it's easier and safer to mandate allergens are always listed than to leave it up to the supplier to judge whether it's sufficiently obvious that the goods contain some of the allergens," one user argued.

Another added: "If it's not risking harm, and may potentially help people, and it's very simple and cheap to do: why not do it?"

But many shoppers seemed pretty fed up by the labelling.

One user simply remarked: "Natural selection needs to be a thing."

It seems these so-called "woke warnings" might not just be limited to the 224g sea bass found at Morrisons.

Online Tesco shoppers spotted similar alerts on their seafood products.

A listing for prawns stated that they "may contain fish and molluscs".

The website also told customers that salmon "contains fish" and their Scottish mussels "contain molluscs".

One person quipped: "Every little helps, Tesco, but not when it comes to this level of wokeness."

Another frustrated shopper felt it reflected poorly on the public.

They added: "I think this just shows the average level of intelligence in our society."

However, the law states that 14 specific allergens must be clearly listed on food packaging, and both fish and molluscs are included in that group.
