At least 82 migrants died when trying to cross the Channel in 2024

Hundreds of migrants have arrived in Britain after two died making the journey across the Channel.

GB News understands that at least 800 migrants have crossed the channel in a record day. This would push the number of migrants who have made the journey from France to England past 13,000 for 2025.

Two migrants died after getting into difficulties in the English Channel, according to French authorities.

It comes days after another migrant died when embarking on the 21-mile journey from France to England.

The boat, which was carrying around 80 migrants, attempted to cross the Channel over the course of Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The deaths come only days after another migrant died, and 62 were forced to be rescued.

In just the last 10 days, five migrants have died in the Channel.

More than 12,500 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year, the most crossings until May since the small boat crisis began.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The International Organisation for Migration, a UN agency, tracks the number of people who died attempting to cross the Channel.

It noted that 82 migrants died in the Channel last year, over three times as many as in 2023.

Of the 82, 14 were children, a massive increase from the previous year's figure of just one.

It comes as a UK-based people smuggler has been jailed for 25 years for being part of a £12million illegal boat crossing operation.

Egyptian-born, Ahmed Ebid, 42, helped "ruthlessly and cynically" organise the movement of nearly 3,800 migrants, including women and children, with some of them making their way to Britain, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Ebid even told an associate to kill and throw any migrants into the sea if they were caught with phones.

The 42-year-old did all of this while living in his home in Isleworth, southwest London. He was detained in the town in June 2023.

Ebid helped at least seven separate crossing operations, which carried around 3,781 people into Italian waters.
