More than 2,000 Channel crossings were recorded in just four days

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has earned the unenviable accolade of overseeing 10,000 small boat crossings since accepting the new role in Sir Keir Starmer's September reshuffle.

The latest tally means Ms Mahmood has reached the milestone in just 66 days, faster than any of her predecessors since 2022.

The disastrous news for the Home Secretary comes as 2,000 crossings of migrants were recorded in just four days.

Yevetter Cooper, Ms Mahmood’s predecessor, managed to avoid the milestone for a marginally better 74 days.

Ultimately, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer moved Ms Cooper sideways to the Foreign Office after she appeared unable to manage Britain’s migrant crisis.

Under the previous Government, the 10,000 crossings tally was reached in 171 days under James Cleverly.

Priti Patel, who is now Shadow Foreign Secretary, managed to maintain lower numbers for 583 days.

However, Suella Braverman proved to be the only Home Secretary to have reached the grim tally faster.

Ms Braverman oversaw 10,000 crossings in just 43 days in 2022.

This was the same year that a record number of crossings over the English Channel were made, in part owing to a surge of Albanian migrants.

Three years on, Government insiders have said Ms Mahmood is disappointed at the “unfortunate” timing of reaching the milestone.

It comes as the Home Office is rolling out plans to house 10,000 asylum seekers in military sites across the country.

Britain’s border force is also contending with human trafficking gangs deploying so-called “mega dinghies” to cram as many migrants as possible into the vessels to make the treacherous journey.

Insiders suggest these new, larger boats can carry as many as 100 people from the French coastline.

The past few days have seen the number of migrants attempting to break into Britain skyrocket after a period of little to no crossings, owing to bad weather.

Last Thursday, there were 621 arrivals, with 648 on Friday.

Saturday saw 503 and 349 attempting to make the journey on Sunday.

It piles further pressure on the Government after another illegal migrant removed under the ‘one in-one out’ deal with France had crossed back.

GB News has discovered that veterans responded with fury when migrants arrived back into UK waters on a small boat on Remembrance Sunday.
