John Rudat spoke to GB News about the horrific ordeal which prompted an emergency response

An American tourist who was stabbed while protecting two women on a German tram has urged European governments to adopt President Trump-style deportation policies.

John Rudat, 21, was left with horrific facial injuries after defending a couple of women from two attackers, both reportedly Syrian nationals.

The model, who is also a paramedic, spoke to GB News about the ordeal that left him with an almighty gash across his face.

The incident occurred in the German city of Dresden, where Mr Rudat formerly lived for a year before heading back to America.

He told People’s Channel star Alex Armstrong that since his ordeal, a lot of people have reached out to him to express concern about how the city is undergoing a rapid, drastic change.

“I fell in love with the city the second I got here. I spent a year abroad in Dresden in 2022 to 2023,” he said.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“Since the accident, I have had hundreds of people reach out to me with their stresses and claims about how over the last ten years, the immigration problem and violence problem has been rising and becoming a legitimate threat to everyday safety.

“People tell me they are afraid to use the tram and understandably so, look at my face.

“I completely understand where they are coming from.”

Mr Rudat was asked about developments in his own country how the current ruling administration, spearheaded by President Trump, is supercharging efforts to detain and deport migrants.

The President came into office targeting more than 10 million unauthorised migrants living in the United States and border crossings have since plummeted.

His crackdown has also seen the doubling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests and a record-high number of detentions.

Asked if European governments should go about establishing a similar agenda, Mr Rudat suggested such moves would be welcomed by many.

He told GB News: “I think the German people would really appreciate policies like that. I think the German people would like feeling safe on their own transportation systems.

“I hope that the German Government and the people of Germany push for exactly that. Policy for more safety.”

Mr Rudat then told Alex how his return to Dresden was marred by the event which subsequently put a hold on his plans to make the most of the sights on offer across Europe.

“It definitely surprised me”, he said.

“I never expected that night to turn into this and I did not expect to delay my visits across Europe, seeing the beauty of Europe.”

Explaining the circumstances behind the shocking ordeal, he told GB News: “I had entered the tram and took a seat next to the woman who would be assaulted by the man.

“The men came over and started disturbing her, harassing her. I stood up and told him to stop. At the time, my friends translated the language as I could not understand it at the time.

“I wasn’t there for a fight and I wasn’t there to start a conflict. The woman stood up, the men came back yelling and screaming. They grabbed her and hit her, that’s when I knew I had to intervene.

“I extended my hand and he took that as a threat to violence. He proceeded to hit me, I exchanged blows with him. My main priority was the safety of the woman but he continued trying to attack me.

“At that time, I heard a quick click. I looked to my right and saw a man that I had never seen before with a brutal expression on his face. He lifted up his hand and cut me across the face.

“It was a big surprise. I never expect to get in a knife altercation. I have witnessed and experienced first hand that this problem is only getting worse.”

Police confirmed on Tuesday morning, a 21-year-old man, named as Majid A, was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the attack.

Majid was released within 12 hours as there was not enough evidence tying him to the crime.

But police said new evidence surfaced, leading to his re-arrest.

“Now that further investigation results are available... [Majid] is also under strong suspicion of having been involved in the knife attack on the American and of having injured the victim with a dangerous object,” the police said.

“Upon learning of the new findings, the Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office immediately ordered the provisional arrest of the 21-year-old suspect.

“The Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office filed an application for an arrest warrant against the suspect with the investigating judge of the Dresden District Court, which the investigating judge issued and executed as requested.

“The suspect is now in pretrial detention.”

Majid’s alleged involvement in the crime was not explicitly stated by the police, who are still looking for a second alleged assailant.

Horrifying footage from the attack showed Mr Rudat with a tissue to his face with blood splatters trailing across the floor.

Other passengers appeared shell-shocked after witnessing the gory episode first-hand.

Mr Rudat underwent extensive surgery after being rushed to receive immediate medical attention.

The 21-year-old was visiting the German city to see his former foreign exchange host family.
