A man has died after being shot by armed police in south-east London, the Metropolitan Police has said.

Officers were responding to calls for help from the occupants of an address in Southwark, who said the man was trying to force his way inside the property.


The man, believed to be in his 30s, was armed with a crossbow and was threatening to harm residents at the address.

At about 4.55am on Tuesday (January 30) police were called to reports of a man attempting to force entry to a home in Bywater Place, Rotherhithe.

Attempts were made to speak to the man, however, he soon threatened the local officers, forcing them to call for armed backup.

By the time they were on the scene, the man had managed to enter the property. A firearm was then discharged.

The man was quickly treated by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, who arrived promptly at the address, but they were unable to save him.

Police said that two occupants received minor injuries during the incident.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun into the incident.

Enquiries have begun to inform the next of kin.

Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, responsible for policing Southwark, said: “My thoughts are with all those affected by this incident.

“I understand the local community will be concerned at the events that have taken place this morning. We will fully support the IOPC investigation into the full circumstances of what happened.”

An IOPC spokesman said: “We have begun an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a man by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) earlier this morning in Southwark.

“We were notified by the MPS after the incident, which occurred shortly before 5am, and declared an independent investigation at around 6.40am.

“We have sent investigators to the scene and the police post-incident procedure to begin gathering evidence.

“Our investigation is in its very early stages.”
