McDonald's is suffering from a global technical malfunction, with diners reporting that they are unable to order food across the UK and several other nations.

The fast food chain has confirmed there was a "system failure" in Japan and asked customers to "wait for a while" for service to be restored.


Social media users have also complained of issues in the UK, Germany Australia, New Zealand, and Austria.

Downdetector, a system used to monitor IT problems in businesses, noted a spike in issues with the McDonald's UK app from around 05:00 GMT on Friday.

A spokesperson from McDonald's in Japan, which operates around 3,000 stores in the country, said: "There is currently a system failure. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and ask that you please wait for a while until the service is restored."

The New York Times reports that McDonald's Hong Kong was also experiencing a "computer system failure" - with mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks not functioning.

A McDonald's Australia spokesperson said they were also aware of a technology outage impacting its restaurants nationwide and were working to resolve this issue.

Some of the more than 160 stores in New Zealand also reported outages. A company spokesperson told the New Zealand Herald newspaper: "Restaurants are experiencing an IT issue that's impacting their ability to process orders."

Notice signs were put up in the branches in Japan reading: "To Customers. We are closed due to an internal McDonald's system error. We apologise for inconvenience."

A McDonald’s spokesperson told GB News: We are aware of a technology outage which impacted our restaurants. The issue has now been resolved in the UK and Ireland.

"We thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. The issue is not related to a cybersecurity event."

One said on X, formerly Twitter: "McDonald’s system was down and they could take orders…never heard of anything like that before in my life!"

Another added: "I was going to go get McDonald's because I saw [an] ad and now there's a system outage."
