Police said they are working to 'assess any casualties'

A small plane has crashed in Greater Manchester sparking a response from emergency services.

Police were called to reports of a light aircraft crash in the town of Littleborough, Rochdale, today.


Residents have been urged avoid the area while officers remain at the scene.

The plane is believed to have come down on land between Blackstone Edge and Hollingworth Lake.

Two people were reportedly on board at the time.

"Emergency services are responding to reports of a light aircraft crash in the Littleborough area," a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said.

"A scene is in place whilst emergency service workers conduct their enquiries and people are asked to avoid the area as this work is carried out."

According to flight data, the Cirrus SR 20 plane had earlier taken off from Birmingham.

Stephanie Mills, from Dickey Steps Riding School in Littleborough, said she spotted a yellow parachute near to the scene.

"There wasn't any noise, I didn't hear anything but there is a huge yellow parachute," she told the BBC.

"There is a lot of police and helicopters here too."
