Fire crews have today rushed to a south London tower block after a blaze broke out in a flat.

The London Fire Brigade is asking people to avoid the area whilst officers respond to the blaze.

A flat on the 11th floor of the 17-storey building was completely alight.

Footage posted on social media showed smoke rushing out of the block of flats as firefighters attempt to contain the blaze.

Officers confirmed a woman left the property before the LFB arrived.

Station Commander Tony Perks, who was at the scene, said: "This was a very visible fire, and the area became increasingly busy as a result.

"People are advised to continue to avoid the area at this time, while crews damp down remaining hot spots."

The Brigade received the first of around 45 calls at 1355 and Control Officers have mobilised crews from Dowgate, Dockhead, Soho, Whitechapel and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

However, the fire was brought under control by 2.54pm.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
