She said the nurses had been left with no choice but to take legal action against County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust

A group of nurses in Darlington are taking their NHS trust to an employment tribunal after raising concerns about being forced to share a changing room with a transgender woman.

Speaking to GB News, Uzochi Nwaubani from the Christian Legal Centre said the case is about "truth and dignity" and protecting women’s rights to single-sex spaces.

She said the nurses had been left with no choice but to take legal action against County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, accusing bosses of ignoring a recent Supreme Court ruling which confirmed the legality of single-sex spaces.

"The trust has failed to recognise the law," Ms Nwaubani said. "This isn’t about exclusion, it’s about ensuring women have safe spaces."

She revealed the nurses have even set up their own union after feeling unsupported by their employer.

Speaking to Miriam Cates, she said: "That’s ultimately the substance of this case, why has that happened?

"And it’s concerning that it has, considering that the Supreme Court, in April 2025, ruled that single-sex spaces are permitted and should be used by biological men for men’s spaces and biological women for women’s spaces.

"Ultimately, this case is about truth and dignity, about protecting women’s spaces so they can change comfortably and safely.

"It’s also about contending for truth, both biblical and biological, because Christians such as myself believe that God created male and female.

"That truth is also reflected in law and common sense, and should be upheld by public institutions.

"It’s a real shame that it’s got to this point that the Trust has failed to recognise the law.

"The nurses have now found themselves in this situation where they’re having to challenge the Trust, bringing a claim in order to push back. They’ve shown extraordinary courage in doing so.

"The nurses have now found themselves in this situation where they’re having to challenge the Trust, bringing a claim in order to push back. They’ve shown extraordinary courage in doing so.

"They’ve lacked support from the Trust to the point where they’ve had to set up their own union, the Darlington Nursing Union.

"That just demonstrates their resilience.

"This is such an important case, not only for them, but for women across the country being able to feel safe changing in single-sex spaces.

"You wonder why they’ve had to do this, particularly after that Supreme Court ruling, which was unequivocal and unanimous."
