The Culture Secretary wore a 'protect the dolls' T-shirt to Wigan Pride over the weekend

Cabinet Minister Lisa Nandy has been branded a "disgrace" after wearing a pro-trans rights T-shirt during a Pride march.

The Culture Secretary posted pictures to social media of her attending Pride celebrations in her Wigan constituency, in which she can be seen wearing a top with the slogan "protect the dolls".

She wrote on Facebook: "Had a fantastic time at the 10th anniversary of #WiganPride today! Amazing turnout for the parade & celebrations."

Ms Nandy added that she was "proud" to live in such a "welcoming, inclusive town".

However, the Wigan MP faced backlash following the post, including from one woman who labelled the MP a "disgrace".

The critic also called for Ms Nandy to be "sacked immediately", saying the move was a "serious error of judgement".

The term "doll" dates back to the 1980s and is used to show support for transgender women.

Another social media user wrote: "What 'dolls' do you think you are protecting? Protect the women and children of your constituency will you?"

Several people made reference to a ruling in the Supreme Court in April which stated that the definition of a woman is based on biological sex for Equality Act purposes.

"Unbelievably stupid T-shirt to be wearing for a Government Minister who is responsible for Sport and Culture to be appearing to support men in women’s spaces," one person said.

"Is she aware of the Supreme Court ruling?"

Campaigner James Esses also voiced his criticisms of Ms Nandy's outfit choice, describing it as a "middle finger from the Labour government to everyone who believes in biological reality".

"Week after week, senior figures reveal their true colours and yet [Sir Keir Starmer] does nothing, demonstrating that Labour doesn’t care about women," Mr Esses said.

Meanwhile, other social media users showed support for the Culture Secretary's post.

"Really proud of the show of solidarity today in the face of some really backwards rhetoric," one social media user wrote.

"Super proud the borough is represented locally by people who remain an ally to the LGBTQ+ community."

Ms Nandy was previously slammed for saying she believes trans men and women should be "accommodated in a prison of their choosing".

Author JK Rowling accused her of being "one of the biggest reasons" why many women don't vote for the Labour Party.

Celebrities including Pedro Pascal have also faced backlash after sporting T-shirts with "protect the dolls" written on them.

The Last of Us star was hit with criticism on social media, with people saying the slogan “dehumanises” women, The Telegraph reports.
