Footage of Just Stop Oil protesters being knocked by cars has sparked outrage on social media.

The group have become a public nuisance in recent years with demonstrations aimed to cause as much disruption as possible.

Donning mostly orange attire along with a now infamous vest, the group often stop traffic and sports events in their bid to encourage as much publicity as possible, whether good or bad.

One particular instance has prompted a backlash, with a social media user questioning a “lack of respect”.

Commenting on a video of three cars appearing to disregard the eco-activists attempting to step in front of them, X user Dr. Jebra Faushay commented: “I’m appalled at the lack of respect towards the Just Stop Oil protesters.

“They are practically being run down! Is this how you treat those who are trying to save the planet?”

Others aren’t as receptive to the point of view, with one user commenting: “I think they should ‘just stop’ blocking traffic!”

Another added: “Being in the road won’t save the planet but is a safety hazard”.

It comes after five members of the group were charged with aggravated trespass for disrupting a performance of Les Miserables in London’s West End.

The performance at the Sondheim Theatre was brought to a halt at around 9pm on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police said.

The five people charged are Hannah Taylor, 23, Lydia Gribbin, 28, Hanan Ameur, 22, Noah Crane, 18, and Poppy Bliss, 19.

They have been released on bail and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 3.

Several activists “invaded” the stage at the Sondheim Theatre during Do You Hear The People Sing?, locking themselves onto it with flexible bicycle locks.

Audience members will be offered refunds or tickets for another performance following the protest on Wednesday.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Just Stop Oil wrote: “4 people are locked to the stage of the French-revolution-themed show.

“Valjean steals bread to feed a starving child. How long before we are all forced to steal?”

Detective Inspector Chris Rudd of the Met’s Public Order Command said: “Many of those in the audience will have travelled significant distances, having purchased tickets months in advance, and it is unacceptable that demonstrators have targeted a specific group of people in order to ruin what should have been a special night out.

“We are aware of footage circulating on social media, but ask anyone with additional footage to get in touch as this will help us bring those responsible to account.”

On Thursday, the Les Miserables company announced a booking extension from March 2 to September 28 2024.

Police urge anyone with footage to contact them on 101, online or by tweeting Tweet ‘X’ @MetCC quoting 2074/5OCT.
