A British Transport Police Superintendent gave an update on the vile attack this morning

The heroic bravery of everyday Britons has been praised in the aftermath of the gruesome train attack on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning in the wake of the attack, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mayor Paul Bristow lauded "everyday people doing extraordinary things".

Speaking to GB News, the Tory mayor further paid tribute to the gentleman who reportedly sheltered a young girl from the Cambridgeshire train stabbings suspect.

It is believed that, on Saturday night, a man with a large knife went on a bloody rampage through the high-speed train after it departed Peterborough station in Cambridgeshire.

Speaking to Andrew Pierce, Mr Bristow lauded the heroic actions of Britons last night, saying: "It seems to me that everyday people, people are capable of extraordinary things.

"And the gentleman you refer to to protect a young girl like that.

"I hope when all things come to light that he's okay. That's the first thing because I understand he's got injuries to his neck and and his head, but hopefully he's recognised for what he did.

"We're all capable of extraordinary things. And none of us know how we will react in the situation."

He further added that "today is obviously going to be a day where we will reflect on what's happened".

"We can talk about, you know, how we let the public know exactly what's happened in that open and transparent way," he told Andrew. "I think that's really, really important. And we've got to learn the lessons of all this."

The train destined for London King's Cross halted at the Cambridgeshire station, where armed police were deployed and made arrests within eight minutes of the 999 call.

Ten individuals sustained injuries and were subsequently taken to hospital, while two are still fighting for their lives.

Delivering an update, superintendent John Loveless went on to offer his gratitude to the public services involved in the rapid response.

"I would like to thank the public personally for their patience and their cooperation yesterday evening, which is already greatly assisted our investigation through the help the public attended, as well as the multi-agency response partners from colleagues in other blue light services," he said, speaking outside the station.

He added: "I'd like to extend my thanks to our colleagues within Cambridgeshire Police, the East of England Ambulance Service, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and counter-terrorism policing."

Echoing the officer's words, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: "After last night’s horrific attack, my thoughts today are with the victims, their friends and family.

"My deepest thanks go to the British Transport Police, Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and the East of England Ambulance Service.

"They responded rapidly, with the utmost professionalism and saved lives. I would also like to pay tribute to the exceptional bravery of staff and passengers on the train."

Two people have been confirmed to still be battling life-threatening conditions in hospital while the police announced they have arrested two British nationals.

A 32-year-old black man and a 35-year-old man of Caribbean descent are being held in police custody.

The attack is not being treated as terrorism.
