Heathrow is the busiest airport in the UK

Heathrow Airport has been plunged into chaos as the closure of a tunnel to Terminals 2 and 3 left hundreds of passengers trapped.

The London airport issued a statement in which it apologised to travellers for the disruption.

It read: "Due to a technical issue, the Central Terminal Area tunnel to Terminals 2 and 3 is currently closed.

"Please use public transport to Terminal 5, where train services are available to all other terminals. We’re working hard to resolve the issue and apologise for the disruption."

Travellers have shared photos online of hundreds of passengers trapped in large crowds.

Heathrow is the busiest airport in the UK, facilitating over 80 million people annually, according to their media site.

GB News has approached Heathrow for further comment.

National Highways has also shared that the M4 Heathrow Spur entrance into the two terminals is closed and was causing "severe delays".

They said: "The #M4 Heathrow Spur (at J4) into T2 and T3 is being CLOSED. For access to #HeathrowAirport please use the #M25 J14 and head towards T5.

"There are already severe delays on the spur road. Please allow extra time if heading to the airport this morning."

GB News understands that the tunnel has now reopened.

It follows a temporary evacuation of some areas of Terminal 3 two weeks ago while the fire service investigates a fire alarm that went off.

Passengers reported huge queues and baggage claim being shut, and questioned why immigration lines were "not moving" at the airport.

One upset passenger wrote: "Can someone tell us why immigration lines at Heathrow are shut down?

"Been standing here for an hour with no movement in sight."

Another said: "Border shut down been waiting here forever. Why is there not a contingency plan for a situation like this? We can’t stay here forever…"
