The Somali-born British national was also charged with a separate count of attempted murder following an incident in Southwark

Somali-born British national Essa Suleiman has been charged with attempted murder after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green on Wednesday.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the 45-year-old suspect, from Camberwell in London, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Mr Suleiman was also charged with a separate count of attempted murder after an incident was reported in Great Dover Street, Southwark, just hours before the incident in Golders Green.

He will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later today, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.

The Somali-born British national was charged in connection with an attack against two men in North London.

Frank Ferguson, Head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said: “We have authorised two charges of attempted murder against Essa Suleiman, and one of possession of a knife, after two men were stabbed in Golders Green, north west London, on Wednesday, April 29.

"We have also authorised an attempted murder charge in a separate incident involving another man on the same day in a different location.

“Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.

“We have worked closely with the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command as it carried out its investigation.

“We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.

“It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Commander Helen Flanagan, the head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, added: "Our thoughts remain with the victims involved and specialist officers continue to provide them with support as their recovery continues.

"We are determined to get justice for the victims and now that a person has been charged, I would urge everyone to avoid any further speculation in relation to this case so that justice can run its course."

Two Jewish men, Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, were treated on Highfield Avenue in Golders Green for stab wounds.

Mr Rand, who has since been discharged from hospital, said it was a "miracle" he survived the attack.

Meanwhile, the 76-year-old remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Suleiman arrived in the UK legally back in the 1990s and later obtained British citizenship.

Following Wednesday's attack, the UK terrorism threat was raised to "severe" – meaning that another terror attack is "highly likely".

The Home Office said that the threat level had been "rising for some time".

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley told GB News that a rising caseload, combined with global events, led to the raised threat level.

"We've already had hundreds of extra officers patrolling in north west London, and I've had positive feedback from Jewish community leaders on that," Sir Mark added.

"My concern is my ability in a shrinking organisation to sustain that. On Wednesday evening, I put proposal into Government about the best part of 300 extra officers it's going to take to strengthen the local neighbourhood policing teams and the specialist, such as armed officers, to support them.

"That's what I'm looking to do and I need urgent support financially to do that.

"That initial announcement made yesterday is a first step, and I'm pleased that we're having urgent conversations about how to build that up into something that will give that protection that's necessary."
