The new guidance has come into force with immediate effect

GB News has issued a statement in response to Ofcom's revised guidance on politicians presenting news.

The updated guidance, which was issued by the broadcast regulator today, clarifies that politicians are not allowed to be 'newsreaders', unless it is exceptionally justified.

Responding to the announcement, a spokesman said: "GB News welcomes Ofcom's decision not to proceed with its proposed changes to the rules.

"We always believed that the rules were clear and that Ofcom’s decision is not only the correct one in our view but also consistent with the judgment of the High Court in February 2025 following our successful legal challenge.

"We will always vigorously defend the channel and our audience's freedom of speech rights.

"GB News is thriving with record audiences because it is focused on serving all of the nation's communities and delivering on its mission to be the People's Channel, fearlessly championing Britain's voices and its values."

Ofcom's new guidance states that the political allegiance of politician presenters must be made clear and updated its definition of 'politician' to include members of the House of Lords and representatives of political parties.

The update comes after a High Court judgment quashed the regulator's ruling against GB News relating to shows hosted by Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg when he was an MP.

The ruling found that Ofcom’s decisions were impaired by an "error of law" and that it "conflated a news programme and a current affairs programme".

Ofcom said its new guidance would come into force with immediate effect.
