A group of children and adults were reportedly left injured as around 3,000 people attended a fireworks display hosted by a cricket club in Staffordshire

Several people have been injured after fireworks went into a crowd during an organised display at a cricket club.

The incident took place at an event hosted by Stone Swynnerton Park Cricket Club in Staffordshire.

Stone's firework display, which was attended by around 3,000 people, saw the pyrotechnics veer into the crowd at around 7pm.

"A firework went off into the crowd and a load of people ran away," an eyewitness said.

"I heard an announcement made that they were asking for a first aider and I was told that six people were hit by fireworks. The fireworks later resumed."

A terrified father added: "It hit the family standing right beside us.

"We felt the heat as it came into us. My son's hood is singed."

Writing on Facebook, another guest wrote: "It came right at myself, my two children and my other half, I had to throw my daughter.

"We left after it happened, hope everyone else was okay."

Six people were said to have been hit by the fireworks.

A call was reportedly put out on a tannoy for a first aider.

The firework display was briefly paused but resumed soon after.

An eyewitness suggested there was no sign of any ambulances arriving at the cricket club but other reports claimed St John's Ambulance were in attendance.

Staffordshire Police confirmed officers were not called out to attend the event.

Tickets were available for the West Midlands' fireworks display for £5 per adult.

Children were able to attend the "fireworks extravaganza" on Lichfield Road for free.

Members of the public were invited to arrive at the cricket club from 4.30pm but the display started at around 7pm.

Addressing usual concerns about safety, organisers said a month ago: "The fireworks display will be professionally managed by Monumental Fireworks, whilst a professional security company has been hired to ensure the safety of all attendees."
