A drug farm has been discovered in a surprising location after Essex Police uncovered a huge amount of cannabis in a former police station.

The illegal drugs operation was uncovered at the London Road premises after members of the public alerted the force to suspicious activity at the site.

Officers attended the address at around 6.20pm on Tuesday, May 13.

Information was received from the public about cannabis being grown at the location.

Upon entering the building, which was once an Essex Police station, officers found what they described as a "large cannabis grow" being cultivated inside the premises.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "A man has been arrested after officers discovered a cannabis grow at a location in London Road, Harlow.

"We received information on Tuesday, May 13, from the public about cannabis being grown at the location and attended the address at around 6.20pm.

"Inside, the officers found a large cannabis grow, and a short time later, a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation and assault on an emergency worker."

The spokesman confirmed that the individual is still in custody and "enquiries are ongoing".

The property, which is no longer owned by Essex Police, has been listed for sale with Kemsley Property Consultants.

It has been on sale for over a year, since February 2024.

The former police station comprises a two-story office building alongside a single-story vehicle workshop.

The site also features garages and parking spaces, with it being one of the larger properties in the London Road area of Old Harlow.

Just last month, two men were arrested after officers uncovered an industrial-scale cannabis farm in Halstead.

Braintree Neighbourhood Policing Team attended an address on Tuesday, April 15, following a call reporting suspicious activity in the area.

A cannabis grow totalling between 400 and 500 plants was uncovered.
