The 23-year-old will appear before Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday

A migrant has been charged after two people were left injured, allegedly by a man with a knife, in the streets of Edinburgh this week.

The immigrant, from Chad, was arrested following a stand-off with armed police at around 8.30am on Monday.

The knifeman, who had ransacked a local shop and left two people hospitalised, was described as being "covered in blood" by neighbours.

During the attack, members of the public were told to stay indoors, and local schools and nurseries were put into lockdown after reports of a man carrying bladed weapons.

Parents of the nearby Wester Hailes High School were sent a text message at the time of the attack.

It read: "The school is in lockdown following an incident in the community this morning. The children are safe."

A man was left with stab wounds and was treated at The Royal Infirmary, while a woman received treatment for a cut on her head, "not believed to be caused by a bladed weapon".

Both victims have since been discharged from hospital.

Police said the attack was not terror-related.

It took an alleged seven-hour stand-off at a tower block near Calder Gardens before the attacker, who the Daily Mail report has been living in the city for three years, was arrested.

The migrant will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy released a statement on Tuesday, warning against the spread of misinformation online.

"I'm aware misinformation continues to be shared online about this incident which could cause further distress in the local community," he said.

"I'd like to be clear: we did not receive any reports of a man attempting to enter a nursery or any educational establishment and this was not a hostage situation.

"While we understand what happened was frightening, I'd ask people to avoid speculating about the details and be mindful that false information could affect any future court proceedings.

"We still have a police presence in the area for reassurance and I thank the public for their continued assistance and support."

A Home Office spokesman said: "This was a shocking incident. Our thoughts are with those injured, and we thank Police Scotland for their swift response.

"We will not allow foreign criminals and illegal migrants to exploit our laws. We are reforming human rights laws and replacing the broken appeals system so we can scale up deportations.

"All Foreign National Offenders who receive a prison sentence in the UK are referred for deportation at the earliest opportunity."
