Residents claim the noise has been 'relentless'

Neighbours of a landscaping supplies business have complained that noise pollution has made their lives "an absolute misery".

People living on Sunart Close, Shavington in Crewe claim the noise has been "relentless".

One resident claims the noise from RG Landscape Supplies had made her home "unsellable".

Cheshire East Council has confirmed a planning enforcement investigation is being carried out after some residents alleged that the firm does not have the correct planning permission to be operating at the site.

Linda Hawxwell, who has lived on Sunart Close for the last 43 years, said the business started clearing the site in 2020.

"I can’t describe how awful it was, the noise when he was clearing the site to start this business," she told CheshireLive.

"We were absolutely distraught. We couldn’t have visitors, we couldn’t go in the garden. It has been shocking."

The 73-year-old says the noise has continued since the firm opened its doors.

She said: "My house is ruined. My life is ruined. When it’s warm and the windows are open, I can’t read or think straight.

"Your heart just sinks. There’s no getting away from it. The noise is so relentless."

"I said to my husband ‘I’ve got to move’, because I couldn’t read. I even bought myself some really heavy duty headphones – ear protectors."

The resident now fears she will be unable to sell her home due to the noise from her neighbours.

In 2020, planning permission for a certificate of lawful existing use for storage of landscape materials and soil was sought by Rope Garden Nursery for the site.

The application was refused because the applicant had not proven that the land had been used in that way for more than ten years.

Director of RG Landscaping Supplies, Mark Hinkley, has run neighbouring Rope Garden Nursery since 2000, denied that the business did not have the sufficient planning permission for the operation.

He said: "We have repeatedly contacted the neighbours and said ‘Look, if you have any issues or, for example, are having a garden party, a barbecue or doing anything, do let us know and we’ll respectfully not make any noise.’

"We wrote to them 18 years ago. That’s when we first started using that land. We built bays to hold aggregate, sands and stuff, but the majority was converted in 2007 when we built the car park for the nursery."
