The young mum was in a "manic state" after taking the class A drug

A young mum-of-five, Keira Kent, 29, died after taking cocaine and attempting to rip her own teeth out whilst she was in a manic state.

She died at her home in St Ive, near Liskeard in Cornwall, last July despite attempts from paramedics to save her.

The assistant coroner for Cornwall, Guy Davies, said that after taking the drug, Keira’s behaviour became “bizarre and concerning”.

Keira and her partner Liam Crabtree put their children to bed after having a BBQ, and then took the class A drug.

The inquest heard how the mum soon retreated upstairs where her partner discovered her lying on her pillow, surrounded by blood.

She had attempted to extract her wisdom teeth herself using a razor, after suffering with issues relating to them.

Liam wrestled her as she tried to remove her teeth. He then rang emergency services and told them that his partner was trying to pull her teeth out.

Police soon arrived but there was a considerable delay with the ambulance, so officers were forced to handcuff the mum’s hands in order to stop her further harming herself.

When the medics arrived, Keira was tragically pronounced dead, after 30 minutes of CPR administered before their arrival failed to save her.

PCs Gemma Henderson and Leanne Gould who were present at the incident initially believed they were dealing with a mental health crisis.

A post-mortem report revealed that Keira had put her hands in her mouth which caused significant injury. She also had scratches and abrasions, suggesting she had pulled at her own skin.

Her cause of death was recorded as acute behaviour disturbance following cocaine use.

Emergency services did all they could to save Keira

Giving evidence in court, PCs Henderson and Gould said that they did all that they could to save the young mum but just wished the ambulance had turned up sooner.

An IOPC investigation determined that there was nothing more that the pair of police officers could have done to save the 29-year-old.

Davies explained that although Ms Kent's cocaine level was not in the toxic range, it is possible that it can cause death by creating an electrolyte/chemical imbalance, even when no anatomical reasons for death are apparent.

The assistant coroner offered his condolences to the mum’s family and expressed gratitude to officers Henderson and Gould for all they did to help Keira in her final moments.
