The Church of England has broken with centuries of tradition by opening the position of Archbishop of Canterbury to women for the first time in its history.

The historic change comes as the church seeks a replacement for Justin Welby, who vacated the role in January following his resignation over the church's mishandling of an abuse scandal.

A newly published "statement of needs" from the Diocese of Canterbury explicitly states that candidates may be male or female, marking a watershed moment for the institution.

The document outlines extensive requirements for the 106th archbishop, who will serve as the most senior bishop and spiritual leader of both the Church of England and the global Anglican Communion.

The Diocese of Canterbury is seeking a leader with "theological depth" who can communicate effectively with people across all ages and backgrounds.

The successful candidate must be someone of the "utmost integrity who is able to speak honestly" about issues and injustices within the church.

The role requires a "servant leader who shows compassion towards the disadvantaged and marginalised" whilst being "unapologetic about offering a Christian perspective to local, national, and international dialogue".

The new archbishop must be willing to ordain and consecrate both men and women and support their ministry.

They must also have "worked, and will continue to work constructively" regarding ongoing discussions about blessing services for same-sex couples, whilst being able to "embrace" both supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage within the church.

The position traditionally goes to candidates who have already held senior leadership roles within the church.

Applicants must be at least 30 years old and typically younger than 70.

Rather than a conventional application process, candidates are usually "invited" to participate.

Earlier this year, more than 11,000 people took part in a public consultation, submitting both candidate suggestions and desired qualities for the role.

The appointment is expected to be announced by autumn, approximately one year after Welby's resignation.

Welby stepped down in November 2024.

It followed criticism over the church's handling of abuse by John Smyth QC, described as potentially the most prolific abuser associated with the church.
