So-called 'medical tourism' to Turkey has boomed in recent years due to low prices

A British tourist has died after undergoing a hair transplant in Turkey.

Local police are investigating the private clinic where the 38-year-old underwent his procedure.

The Briton flew to Istanbul for a five-hour operation which took place on Monday at the Dr Cinik clinic in the Besiktas district.

However, shortly after the surgery, the man became seriously unwell and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, according to Turkish outlet OdaTV.

His body was then taken to the Forensic Science Institute of Turkey before being repatriated.

Police have now launched an investigation into the case, calling it a possible "reckless homicide".

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Turkey and are in contact with local authorities."

It is understood that staff at the clinic, including the surgeon who performed the operation, the anaesthesiologist and nurses, have already been questioned by officers.

So-called "medical tourism" has boomed in recent years, especially to Turkey.

The country accounts for nearly 60 per cent of the global hair transplant market due to its cheaper, high-quality products.

According to the Turkish Healthcare Travel Council, more than one million people travel to the country every year for hair restoration treatments.

Another British man was recently left scarred after a botched hair transplant in Istanbul.

Then 26-year-old Luke Horsfield paid £1,250 for the procedure at the Clinic Centre.

This is approximately half the price of the procedure in the UK, but Horsfield said the results were disastrous.

The IT technician from Bradford said: "I did everything they told me to do as aftercare once I had the operation.

"But after four months, I saw literally no growth.

"I was left with scars and bald patches."

Horsfield claimed the surgeons, who he said could barely speak English, removed too many follicles from the back of his head, and left him worse than he was before.

He also said that he struggled to contact anyone from the clinic after the operation, despite a promise of "transplant after care".

Eventually, the clinic offered him a £400 refund, and a second procedure at half price.
