The extra funding brings the UK's total commitment to Ukraine since the start of the war to £400m

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced an extra £175million worth of humanitarian aid for Ukraine as the Russian invasion continues.

The fresh funds bring the UK’s total commitment to Ukraine since the start of the war to £400m.

Speaking during a press conference in London alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Netherlands’ Mark Rutte, Mr Johnson said the three countries “stand shoulder to shoulder against Russia’s barbaric invasion”.

He added: “In the 12 days since Russia launched this illegal and brutal assault, the world has come together in solidarity with the indomitable people of Ukraine.”

The Russian invasion has now entered its twelfth day, with air strikes causing havoc across large parts of the country.

But President Vladimir Putin's plans to capture the capital, Kyiv, has hit a stumbling block, with Ukrainians continuing to hold firm.

And Mr Johnson said now is the time for Ukraine's allies “to create a coalition of humanitarian, economic and defensive military support” to ensure Putin’s “catastrophic invasion” fails.

He added: “After 12 days, it’s already clear that Putin has made a miscalculation."

“He has underestimated the Ukrainians and their heroic resistance. He’s underestimated their leader and he’s underestimated the unity of the West.”

Meanwhile, Mr Trudeau said Canada was imposing new sanctions on 10 individuals, which include "former and current senior government officials, oligarchs and supporters of the Russian leadership."

Mr Rutte said the Netherlands was prepared to consider “all possible sanctions” before adding that it wouldn't take “unmanageable risks” to energy supply across Europe.
