The recent mini reshuffle of Government led to newcomer MP Joy Morrissey, first elected in 2019, becoming Boris Johnson’s Parliamentary Private Secretary.
Now an embarrassing letter has emerged where she had written to someone in her Beaconsfield constituency, slamming Mr Johnson for breaking promises not to cut foreign aid.
Reports say she had written to the voter and argued that when compared to Government borrowing, foreign aid cuts were a "drop in the ocean", but still have a huge impact on the poorest people in the world.
Ms Morrissey’s office had at first claimed the letter was not genuine when contacted by the Daily Mail, though it has been reported they now accept it is genuine, and merely a template sent in error.
The letter included comments where Ms Morrissey was critical of the timing of foreign aid cuts during the period the UK held the G7 presidency.
A spokesman for Ms Morrissey has said the letter was “regrettably” sent to a constituent in error and she “fully supports” the Government’s foreign policy.
